Donald C. & Ruth A. Webster Scholarship Fund Most important eligibility is financial need, then academics (min. 3.0 GPA) ability and determination to succeed in college, and active citizenship in school and community. Maine State Nurses Association Three $1000 scholarships awarded to students who will be atending an accredited nursing program in Maine. 3.0 GPA or higher; cover letter; 3 letters of recommendation required. Jones Memorial Scholarship Any senior who graduated from Head Start and is planning to enroll in a two or four year commuity college, technical or vocational school is eligible. DEADLINE: December 15, 2007 Androscoggin Retired Teachers' Association Scholarship $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a student planning to enter the teaching profession. The reciient will be selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and need. Entry can be an essay or any creative project (video, song, t-shirt design, etc.) that offers new ideas on how to convince teenagers to stay safe and "arrive alive." AXA Achievers are people who will succeed in life because they have an extra element of grit and determination. FMI visit www.axa-achievement.com DEADLINE: February 15, 2008 Ayn Rand Essay Contests Two separate essay contests, one for 9th & 10th graders on the novel "Anthem" (DEADLINE: March 20, 2008), the other for 11th & 12th graders on the novel "The Fountainhead" (DEADLINE: April 25, 2008). The Barking Foundation This private, non-profit foundation provides grants for the accredited post-secondary education of meritorious State of Maine residents, based on their demonstrated financial need. Other qualities considered are character, accomplishments, values and aspirations. Essay and references required. This is a very competitive grant program, so applying early is encouraged. DEADLINE: February 15, 2008 BEAM/The Business Education Association of Maine Business Education Teacher's Child or Ward Scholarship is available to a business teacher's child or ward who is in college or planning to attend college. The candidate need not be enrolled in a business program. Two Business Teacher Education Training Scholarships are available for students who are enrolled in a business teacher education training program. DEADLINE: April 30, 2007 Best Buy Scholarship The Best Buy Scholarship has been extablished to reward well-rounded students who have given back to their community. DEADLINE: February 15, 2008 Bob Elliott - Channel 8 Journalism Scholarship Applicant must be a high school senior within the WMTW viewing area who plans to major in journalism, communications or related area of study. Student must write a 500-word essay and have two letters of recommendation evidencing academic and professional motivation. DEADLINE: April 30, 2008 Community Little Theatre Eastman Scholarship One $400 scholarship will be awarded to a senior who plans to major or minor in performing arts while in college. DEADLINE: May 2, 2008 Donald M. Gay Scholarship Consideration for this scholarship will be based on significant contributions to the EL music and/or arts program. Two recommendations, one from a teacher and the other from an activity advisor/teacher, are required. An essay of no less than 100 words is required. The award honors the memory of Jamie Benson who died August 11, 2002, and who would have been a member of the class of 2008. A maximum of $4,000 will be awarded over a four-year period. Asali Memorial Scholarship and presents annually a $1000 Scholarship to a graduating senior of area high schools who plan to purse a post secondary education in the mechanical engineering field. DEADLINE: April 1, 2008 Maine Masonic Scholarship Program/Grand Lodge of Maine The criteria that the committee should look for are leadership, citizenship, financial need and scholastic achievement. DEADLINE: Postmarked by April 15, 2008 Maine Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers $2000 scholarship for an outstanding high school senior who plans a career in civil engineering. Honorary Scholarship Scholarships awarded to two seniors planning to major in an engineering program in or out of state. Applicants must show an active interest in golf, evidence of financial need, must also demonstrate outstanding character, integrity and leadership. must also show participation in extracurricular, civic and/or community activities. Applicant must have a high school GPA of 3.5 (B+) or better, and complete the National Co-op Scholarship Program application including a typed one-page essay describing the reasons for choosing to pursue a college cooperative education program. Byrd Honors Scholarship (FAME) Federally funded renewable scholarship for high school seniors continuing their education. Superior academic performance is primary criterion. DEADLINE: April 15, 2007 Ron Brown Scholar Program African-American high school seniors who have excelled academically, exemplify exceptional leadership potential, have served their community and have demonstrated financial need. This scholarship in the amount of $10,000 per year is not specific to a major or a college/university and is renewable annually for four years. DEADLINE: First application deadline is November 1, 2007 for Ron Brown and additional scholarship opportunities. Final postmark deadline for Ron Brown only is January 9, 2008. Ruffed Grouse Society Scholarship - Burton L. Spiller Chapter $2000 Scholarship awarded to a student who will be continuing their education in the field of wildlife conservation. Includes wildlife law enforcement, forestry, biology, or management. DEADLINE: Received by Friday, April 4, 2008 2008 SAE Engineering Scholarships Open to seniors intending to earn a degree in engineering or a related science. Must be a US citizen. Mitchell Scholarships Available to any senior who plans to pursue either a two-year or a four-year degree. DEADLINE: April 1, 2008 Stephen Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund This schoarship offers renewable 4-year scholarships to students with financial need who display academic excellence, a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society, good character, and a strong work ethic. Mynahan Scholarship This scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior who has demonstrated academic, athletic and leadership abilities. ust have a cumulative GPA of 85 or better and must have participated in at least one varsity sport. DEADLINE: Must be turned in to the guidance office by March 21, 2008 Trooper Jeffrey S. Parola Foundation Scholarship Must be a Maine resident pursuing a post-secondary education in the field of Law Enforcement; have a C or above average; earned a varsity letter in high school. 300-word essay required and a letter of recommendation from guidance counselor. DEADLINE: April 1, 2008 University of Maine Distinguished Student Visual Art Scholarship Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 offered to qualified first-time undergraduate students, renewable over 8 semesters. Awarded on the basis of merit and evidence of talent or accomplishment in the study of Studio Art, Art History or Art Education. DEADLINE: Must be received by January 23, 2008 University of Southern Maine Boys & Girls Club of Greater Portland and Lewiston/Auburn Applicant must a member of and be referred by, the Toys & Girls Club Scholarship Recommendation Committee. Must a a graduating senior with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Must demonstrate a financial need. DEADLINE: Nomination form must be submitted to club by February 1, 2007. Students must be residents of Maine, must be enrolled in a college in the State of Maine, and must be pursuing a degree in nursing. Students must maintain a 2.9 average in college. DEADLINE: Postmarked by April 15, 2007 Women’s Literary Union In June the Women’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County will award a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school student planning to enter the field of Arts and Literature. The recipient will be selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship and financial need. The amount of the scholarship will be sent to the college bursar after the winner has successfully earned a 2.6 (or better) GPA his/her first semester of college work. Essay required.
